Event Description:
In February, Gallery North features “Basic Elements,” a joint exhibit by photographer and painter Wei Chen and pottery artist Bernadette Crider. Both award-winning artists interpret the basic elements of color, shape, and shadow using their own unique aesthetics, but share the same feeling of peace and calmness in their work.

Wei Chen is well known for her painterly photography. In contrast to traditional realistic photography, she uses light as the paint and the camera as her brush to create surrealistic in-camera images. Wei has spent countless evenings on the beach, seeking moments when the combination of elements of shapes and colors from the ocean and sky all come together. This show includes Wei’s new work created along the Northwest shoreline including Edmonds and Carkeek Park beaches. Wei also will be presenting her oil paintings as part of the “Basic Elements” exhibit.

Bernadette Crider is drawn to the graceful and delicate shape of the leaf and its symbolism—hope, peace, love, longevity, endurance and duality—Bernadette’s carved porcelain work is done primarily using the motif of the fan-like ginkgo leaf. She also works with maple leaves and, as a Yakima resident, can’t help but include hop leaves and cones now and again. She has gravitated to carving into the leather-hard clay before it is fired. The process is slow, requiring more than ten hours of carving time for each large bowl or platter.
